From the seller: “Welcome to my listing for a 1979 MK2 Escort 1600 sport South African import finished in Signal Orange being sold as a winter project.
The car was imported from South Africa a couple of years ago by the Car Cave. It’s fully registered in the UK as a historic vehicle and comes with a UK V5 in my name with 1 previous owner listed. It is therefore tax and MOT exempt.
The engine is a South African 1600 Xflow. Being South African it is a rare AX type block which is desirable for performance xflow’s in the UK, there’s plenty of info on various forums about this should you wish to research it. It retains the original downdraft Webber and the exhaust manifold is a South African type made from scratch by the looks of it! It does run and drive but smokes so could do with a rebuild.
The running gear consists of a type 9 gearbox mated to the original Koln type rear axle, it sits on original 13” steel wheels with fairly new matching tyres all round.
The interior is the original South African type. The door cards could do with replacing along with the kick panels. The back seats are in really good condition however the fronts could do with a bit of work. The original Kmh dials are fitted and the fuel, temperature and RPM gauge don’t work.
As for the body the bonnet needs replacing and the doors are rough and would need replacing depending on how far you go with the car. It’s the South African strengthened shell with the reinforced turrets, there is no sunroof fitted. There is some previous damage to the offside inner wing and offside door which could be improved or just replaced. There has been welding done to the underside previously (See pictures.) The rear arches could also do with tidying.
To conclude the car is being sold as a winter project and needs a fair bit of attention to get back on the road. It could be fully restored or just tidied up. The car will need to be trailered away. Reason for sale is to fund a house purchase.”
