Genuine Camel Trophy Land Rover Defenders do not come up for sale very often. If you’ve been looking for one, here’s your chance!
From the seller: “Here we have for sale a Genuine 1998 Land Rover® 110 300TDI Camel Trophy. This vehicle participated in the 1998 Tierra Del Fuego Expedition as the only support vehicle for the Japanese Team.
For those who do not know, the Camel Trophy was a expedition rally held by Camel & sponsored by Land Rover® between 1981-2000. This rally was used to promote the brand & also the upcoming new models – such as the Discovery, Freelander & Defender. Each year, teams would apply globally to participate – with the successful teams assembled and given a beginning and end destination, with 4 check ins along the way.
As part of this rally, there were also hundreds of “optional” checkpoints, which gained points for the team who reached them first. The winner was the team with the most points at the end of the rally. This involved driving, biking, kayaking, skiing, etc etc.
There are very few genuine and not mocked up examples that actually competed still on the roads in the UK. This was because once the rally was over the vehicles were decommissioned in their destination, or sold to the competing members to be taken elsewhere. Only a few others have ever been for sale on the open market in the UK, and they quite rightly commanded excellent premiums.
These vehicles were produced to cover the harshest terrains and are fully equipped up to the eyeballs with extra kit – raised suspension, underside strengthening, roll cages, roof racks, spotlights, winches, auxillary lighting and this example still has everything it would have had in an unrestored and unmolested condition. These Camel Trophy vehicles were produced by Land Rover®, on specific registrations – all cars were R160-180 “CDU” reg. They were built by Land Rovers’ SVO team in sequence of one another.
The videos of this process can be found on YouTube by googling the rally!”
